Quatre Bras

I love stuff like this.

The 28th Regiment at Quatre Bras by Elizabeth Thompson (Lady Butler), 1875.

  1. By chance I saw this painting last week during a trip to Melbourne (it's currently in the National Gallery Victoria collection). It's a stunning piece, and the first thing that strikes you is the size: it's at least 6 feet wide! Owing to it's size you can clearly distinguish the faces and expressions of each subject, and like you would expect in a battle, each man is wearing a different emotion. While many men are stern in the face of the charge, several others laugh or show fear. I'll link to a photo I took below, but the wikipedia has a MUCH higher-resolution pic. Thanks for the awesome site!
