Marvel Cartoons Theme Songs

The Retroist has posted all the title sequences to 1960's Marvel cartoons.

Of course, everyone remembers the Spiderman theme. But I'm posting the second most memorable one (to me): Captain America!

When Captain America throws his mighty shield
All those who chose to appose his shield must yield
If he's lead to a fight and a duel is due
Then the red and the white and the blue will shine through
When Captain America throws his mighty shield!

Hey Oscar Wilde! It's Clobberin' Time!

Here is a great blog called Hey Oscar Wilde! It's Clobberin' Time! It features someone's personal collection of drawings by comic book artists interpreting their favorite authors or literary characters. via

One of my favorites is George Pratt's rendition of the poet Wilfred Owen:

Dagar the Invincible!

Inspired by this post (which wins my "most insane comic cover I've seen in the last couple of weeks" award), I became curious about Dagar the Invincible. I'm familiar with some Gold Key comics, mainly the war titles and good old Turok Son of Stone, but I'm ashamed to admit I had never heard of Dagar. So here's some nice Sword & Sorcery insanity:

Enemy Ace

Enemy Ace (Hans von Hammer) first appearance was in DC's Our Army at War #151 (Feb. 1965). He went on to appear in Star Spangled War Stories as a regular feature from #138 to #150. Von Hammer appeared in various DC war titles over the years. He was also the subject of two graphic novels: Enemy Ace: War in Heaven and most notably Enemy Ace: War Idyll by George Pratt.

Originally created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert, Enemy Ace has also been depicted over the years by artists such as Russ Heath, Neal Adams, Howard Chaykin, and Frank Thorne.

The Nichovev Plot: Solved!

A little while ago I posted about a painting I purchased where I did not know what book it was from or who the artist was. Thanks to some helpful people at LibraryThing I got the book identified. It is "The Nichovev Plot" from the Nick Carter series. The only copy I've been able to find so far was in England (on Ebay) and I just got it in the mail. This edition was published by Charter Books in 1976. Still no ID on the artist aside from the notation "S. Holland" on the back of the painting. It is still cool to know what book it came from.

The blurb on the cover: "Soviet Premier Nichovev vanishes en route to the White House. Nick's mission: find him before detente turns to wholesale murder!" Apparently there are "death worshiping occultists" at the bottom of this.
