The Gourmet

Here's Bernie Wrightson's classic story "The Gourmet" from the DC humor comic Plop #1 (October 1973). For my money, this is one of the best things Bernie has ever done. Steve Skeates' script has that perfect blend of humor and horror that Wrightson does so well. This was published in the middle of his run on Swamp Thing and you can see how the artist had really honed and tightened and skills while producing a bi-monthly book. The level of brushwork and detail in this story comes close to his later work for Warren publishing. This particularly shows in his frequent renditions of the host, Cain. The drawing of Cain at the top of page 5 is one of my favorite things by Wrightson.

This story was reprinted in DC's Masterwork series #3 and in glorious black and white in A Look Back.

The War of the Worlds!

Here's a cool cover for a illustrated 1938 edition of The War of the Worlds. Published by Whitman. Gotta love the Martian zapping the guys with the white flag.

Monday Night Catch-Up

I should have posted this last week in my Badtime Stories post. Here's a review of that book from Monster Times #6, April 1972.

A friend of mine has started a blog featuring screencaps of titles of classic horror, exploitation, and science fiction movies. Check it out.

Joe Bloke over at Grantbridge Street just posted "The Laughing Man" by Bruce Jones and Bernie Wrightson.

BookSteve recently posted an old promo video for Wrightson's illustrated edition of Frankenstein. You can watch it below:

While searching for the video above, I found another Wrightson Frankenstein segment from a British documentary. The first part incorporates some of the above video, but around 1:58 some different stuff starts. Bernie talks about Boris Karloff. It's pretty cool:

Since this seems to be turning into the Bernie Wrightson roundup, I'll mention that the new issue (#46) of Amazing Figure Modeler has an interview with Bernie.

Four by Wally Wood

Here's some art by the late great Wally Wood. First up is a scan of Wood's original art for the cover of the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #9 (1979):

Next is a Wally Wood illustration that appeared on the back of the Flash Gordon fanzine Heritage #1B (1972)

And finally two sketches of Sally Forth. They are R-Rated, NSFW, what have you. Click on them to see bigger images.
