Walt Reed Illustration Archive

Artstor has the Walt Reed illustration Archive online here. Reed was the author of The Illustrator in America and the founder of The Illustration House. This collection consists of over 200,000 magazine tear sheets depicting works by American illustrators from the late 19th century well into the mid 20th century. Posted below are a few samples I found from just a few minutes browsing.

N.C. Wyeth: The Story of Gold

I never saw this one before, I clipped from an art magazine. It was originally published in a calendar called "The Romance of Commerce," published by John Morrell & Co., 1941. Other plates from the calendar are called "The Story of Furs," "The Story of Coffee," "The Story of Whaling," etc. If the rest are the caliber of this piece, I sure would like to see them.

N.C. Wyeth Action

I don't see early Action Comics non-Superman covers very often. I ran across this image of #8 for sale on the internet and of course instantly recognized where the pose was swiped from. The cover for Action Comics #8, dated January 1939, is by Fred Gaurdineer.

Below that is N.C. Wyeth's The Fight at Glen Falls, from his 1919 edition of Last of the Mohicans. Maybe everybody knew this. I just stumbled across it last night.
