Oddball Comics

In 1994, Kitchen Sink released a set of trading cards called "Oddball Comics." This set feature 36 cards all depicting covers of, well, oddball comics. The trading cards were compiled by artist Scott Shaw! and was based on a popular slide show he often presented at conventions. After I decided to post a few examples from the set, I searched on the internet to see when the cards were originally releahttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifsed. It looks like Scott still has a lively web page all about oddball comics. So here's a taste, then head over to Scott's page and immerse yourself in some comic book weirdness.

The Escape!

This is a nice but kind of strange story by Sergio Aragones from the DC humor comic Plop! #1 (October 1973). Aragones is certainly consistent and he delivers here. There's some great moments and facial expressions in the first few pages of what appears to be a humorous story (even if it takes place in a prison). The last page is an abrupt change of tone from the first part of the story, but Aragones' humorous style pulls it off. And I could look at that last page for quite a long time too.

There! That skull again!

This panel cracks me up. It is from Ripley's Believe It or Not! #53, April 1975. The story is called "Sailing Home." I don't know who the artist is. I wish I was better at identifying these Gold Key artists.

Reed Crandall - Dateline: Hong Kong!

Here's another episode of the adventures of Geri Hamilton from EC's Extra! comic. This leads off with a scan of the original art of Reed Crandall's magnificent splash page, and the scans of the story from the comic. At the bottom is Johnny Craig's cover for this July 1955 comic. Another Geri Hamilton story by Crandall here.
